Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 37402

This specimen was lot 37402 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 1/4 Thistle Merk, 1602. Edinburgh Mint. James VI. PCGS EF-40. Eighth coinage. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1601-04 along with a one, half and eighth merk. The merk was two-thirds of a Scottish pound, making the quarter merk equal to forty pence (3 shillings 4 pence).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.70 g, 0.917 fine silver, 22 mm diameter.
