Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 37403

This specimen was lot 37403 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 1/8 Thistle Merk, 1602. Edinburgh Mint. James VI. PCGS AU-53. Eighth Coinage. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1601-03 along with a one, half and quarter merk. The merk was two-thirds of a Scottish pound, making the eighth merk equal to twenty pence (1 shilling 8 pence).

Specification: 0.85 g, 0.917 fine silver, 18 mm diameter.
