from Künker sale 352, lot 1424

This specimen was lot 1424 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$10,438 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, KÖNIGREICH, Karl XII. 1697-1718. Dukat 1718, Stockholm. GOLD. RR Feine Goldtönung, winz. Druckstelle, fast vorzügich. Erworben 1938 bei der Firma Julius Jenke, München. Der neuangestellte Stempelschneider J. C. Hedlinger versah zum ersten Mal den Dukaten mit einem geriffelten Rand. (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XII, 1697-1718, ducat of 1718, Stockholm mint. Fine gold toning, dent, about extremely fine. Bought from Julius Jenke in 1938. The newly employed die cutter J. C. Hedlinger provided the ducat with a reeded edge for the first time.)"

Charles XII, an unbalanced military genius, took on Russia, Poland and Denmark simultaneously in the Great Northern War. Despite many spectacular victories, he lost and ended up a prisoner of the Turks. Sweden was bankrupted and lost all pretension to being a Great Power. This rare type was issued near the end of the war as Sweden was losing.

Recorded mintage: 2,143.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.976 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: KM 363, Ahlström 20 (R); Fr-53.
