SB0123-43494r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43494 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Daler, 1718. Carl XII. NGC MS-61 Brown. From the Augustana Collection." This copper daler was struck in Sweden in the closing stages of the Great Northern War when Sweden was losing and the government bankrupt. This series (the SCWC lists ten types issued 1715-19) was supposed to be redeemed in silver after the peace. When this didn't happen, the government official responsible for their issue was executed. Mars poses here to stir up martial fervor in a war-weary populace.

Recorded mintage: 300,000.

Specification: 4.5 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-360.
