Sweden 1718 daler KM-A356
This specimen was lot 7311 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Daler, 1718. Carl XII (1697-1718). NGC MS-63 BN. Agile & Ready. Necessity money. Sharply struck with an attractive chocolate brown patina." This copper daler was struck in Sweden in the closing stages of the Great Northern War when Sweden was losing and the government bankrupt. This series (the SCWC lists ten types issued 1715-19) was supposed to be redeemed in silver after the peace. When this didn't happen, the government official responsible for their issue was executed. A armored knight and a lion pose here to stir up patriotic fervor in a war-weary populace.
Recorded mintage: 736,800.
Specification: 4.5 g, copper.
