Stephen Album sale 39, lot 1643

This type was struck 1809-14 in large quantities. It is the most common Napoleonic coin. This specimen was lot 1643 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Napoleon I, Emperor, 1804-1814, AR 5 francs, 1813-Q, only a few wispy hairlines seen by us, uneven toning, NGC graded AU details." This date, a product of the Perpignan mint, while not rare, is priced about 1½ times the 1811-A.

Recorded mintage: 1,824,625[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
