Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1848
JE160-1848r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1848 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,393 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AV 20 francs, 1826 A, Paris. Belle couleur. Superbe. (kingdom of France, Charles X, 1824-30, gold twenty francs of 1826, Paris mint. Nice color, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1824-30 at four mints (Paris, Lille, Nantes and Perpignan) and the 1825-A is by far the most common date. A few of the 1830-A have reeded edges instead of lettered edges. Two reverse hubs were used; one with 4½ leaves in the wreath and the other with five. This is a scarce date.

Recorded mintage: 35,017[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Auguste-François Michaut.

Catalog reference: F.520/3, KM 726.1, Gad-1029; Fr-549.
