Künker sale 384, lot 3216

This specimen was lot 3216 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €280 (about US$362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. 1/4 Dukat 1776. GOLD. R Winz. Stempelfehler, min. gewellt, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Leu 37, Zürich 1985, Nr. 395. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, quarter ducat of 1776. Rare, minor die defects, slightly wavy, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1776-77 and 1782 for Hieronymus von Colloredo. While previous archbishps had issued fractional ducats on a regular basis, von Colleredo did so only sporadically. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.875 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0.86 g.

Catalog reference: KM 443, Fr-883; Probszt 2419; Zöttl 3174 (Type 1).
