Salzburg 1776-M ducat Fr-880
This specimen was lot 3188 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,250 (about US$1,615 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Dukat 1776. Mit Signatur M (Stempelschneider Franz Matzenkopf) unter dem Brustbild. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, ducat of 1776, with signature M below the bust. Extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1772-86 for Hieronymus von Colloredo. It is probably the most common gold coin from this state. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
