Künker sale 403, lot 1362

This specimen was lot 1362 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €600 (about US$787 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"PAPST URBAN VIII., 1623-1644. Die Münzstätte Rom. Testone A XIV (1636/1637), Rom. Mit Wappen des Münzmeisters Stefano Palavicino auf der Rückseite. Sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 138, Osnabrück 2008, Nr. 4659. (Papal States, Urban VIII, 1623-44, testone of the year 14, Rome mint, with the arms of the mintmaster on the reverse. Choice very fine.)"

This type was struck years XII thru XX altho no year XIV is listed in the SCWC. The reverse legend is from the ancient prayer, "Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix. Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. Amen." = "We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen."
