Künker sale 403, lot 1366

This specimen was lot 1366 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$9,841 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST URBAN VIII., 1623-1644. Die Münzstätte Avignon. Quadrupla 1641, Avignon. ° VRBANVS (Unbekanntes Münzzeichen Malteserkreuz) VIII • PONT • MAX • I64I : Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat, darunter das Wappen des Vicelegato Federico Sforza//(Unbekanntes Münzzeichen [drei Ringe übereinander] ) ° ANTONIVS ° CARD ° BARBERINVS • LEGAT • AVEN • Kardinalshut über dem Kardinalswappen auf Malteserkreuz. GOLD. RR Attraktives Exemplar, fast vorzüglich. (Papal States, Urban VIII, 1623-44, quadrupla of 1641, Avignon mint. Obverse: bust right in ornate robes, arms of the vice-legate below; reverse: cardinal's hat over the cardinal's arms over a Maltese cross. Very rare, attractive example, very fine.)"

A city in southeastern France, Avignon is located near the confluence of the Rhone and Durance rivers and was in the possession of the Papacy until annexed by France in 1791. Urban VIII, who was Pope from 1623 until his death in 1644, was the last Pope to expand the Papal territory by force of arms, but he incurred massive debts during his Papacy. The type is listed for 1637-44 but is rare and expensive. The last quadrupla is listed for 1665.
