Sincona sale 77, lot 2894

This specimen was lot 2894 in Sincona sale 77 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Ferdinand II. 1619-1637. 48-Kipper Kreuzer 1622, Olmütz. Münzmeister B. Zwirner, 1621-1624. Sehr schön. Prägeschwächen. (Austria, Ferdinand II, 1619-37, 48 kipper kreuzer of 1622, Olmutz mint. Very fine, Weakly struck.)"

This type was struck 1621-22. The Olmutz normally operated for the benefit of the local bishop but must have been borrowed by the emperor to strike these coins. Kipper 48 kreuzer were struck at Brünn, Klagenfurt, Olmutz, St.-Veit, Vienna, Graz and Hall for the Hapsburg emperor Ferdinand II. Altho nominally a two-thirds thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 24, 30, 48, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 9.46 g.

Catalog reference: KM 316, Herinek 857.
