Baden 1846 1/2 gulden KM-221

Sincona sale 73, lot 1108

This specimen was lot 1108 in Sincona sale 73 (Zurich, November 2021), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$129 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Baden-Durlach, Markgrafschaft, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum. Leopold, 1830-1852. 1/2 Gulden 1846, Karlsruhe. Fast FDC. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Leopold, 1830-52, half gulden of 1846, Karlsruhe mint. About uncirculated.)"

This is a fairly common type struck for the grand duke 1845-52. It superseded a similar coin with a slightly younger bust (KM 209) of 1838-46. The last half gulden was struck in 1869. Baden survived as a coin-issuing state until the destruction of the German empire in 1918.
