Goldberg sale 67, lot 3602

This specimen was lot 3602 in Goldberg sale 67 (Los Angeles, January 2012), where it sold for $4,255. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. 2 Pounds, 1887. Victoria. Jubilee bust left. Reverse: St. George. A choice frosty example in premium grade. Very scarce this nice. PCGS graded MS-65." This is the first issue of this denomination since a few proofs were struck in 1831, during the reign of William IV. The next issue was in 1893 and used the "old head" of Victoria.

Recorded mintage: 91,000 plus 797 proofs.

Specification: 15.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .470 troy oz AGW.
