Brabant 1618(h) 1/2 ducaton
This specimen was lot 609 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,121 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AR demi-ducaton, 1618, Anvers. D/ B. accolés des archiducs à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions, au-dessus du bijou de la Toison d'or. Rare. Flan large. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, half ducaton of 1618, Antwerp mint. Obverse: accolated busts of the archduke and archduchess right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions supports the jewel of the Golden Fleece. Rare, large planchet, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck at Antwerp (shown here) and Brussels (KM 48.2) 1618-21. The ducaton was larger and higher alloy than the contemporary patagon, making it more useful as an international trade coin. Besides the Spanish Netherlands, it was struck extensively in the United Provinces until 1792. Half and quarter ducatons exist but are much scarcer. A few double and triple ducatons were made for presentation.
