Jean Elsen sale 135, lot 1411

This specimen was lot 1411 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu de Flandre aux palmes, 1694W, Lille. 2e réformation. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu rond couronné entre deux palmes, écartelé aux armes de France, Bourgogne nouveau, Bourgogne ancien et Navarre. Rare. Beau/Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of Flanders with palms of 1694, Lille mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned round arms between two palm fronds, quartering France, new Burgundy, old Burgundy and Navarre. Rare, Fine/Very Fine.)"

The specimen shown is a demi-écu de Flandre ("half écu of Flanders") struck in Lille during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1693-99 in limited quantities, mostly overstriking older half écus ("flans reformés"), for circulation in the Spanish Netherlands. Droulers[2] notes this date as common for the type, but it is still five times the price of a demi-écu aux palmes. Lettered edging was introduced to the half écu about 1686.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all "reformed"[2].

Specification: 18.82 g, .857 fine, designed by Joseph Roëttiers; this specimen 18,41 g.

Catalog reference: KM 297, Dupl. 1529; Gad-187; Delm. 423.
