Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 945

This specimen was lot 945 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €500 (about US$623 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or aux lunettes, 1730 Q, Perpignan. Droit: B. drapé à gauche, tête nue. Revers: Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Provient du trésor de la rue Mouffetard, vente Bourgey, Versailles, 7 octobre 1967, 254. Rare. Léger tréflage au droit. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV (1715-74), gold louis of the spectacles of 1730, Perpignan mint. Obverse: draped bust to left; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre under a crown. From the treasure of the Rue Mouffetard, sold October 1967, lot 254. Rare, light obverse damage, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime, this date is rare but awarded little premium in Droulers[1]. Perpignan minted this type 1728-40.

Recorded mintage: 4,028[1], a rare date.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 8,18 g.
