Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1216

This specimen was lot 1216 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €550 (about US$729 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR quart d'écu du Béarn, 1643, Morlaàs. Frappé au marteau. D/ Croix fleurdelisée. R/ Ecu couronné, parti France et Navarre-Béarn, entre II-II. Rare dans cette qualité. presque Superbe. Provient de notre liste 237, juillet-septembre 2006, 1441. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver quarter écu of Béarn of 1643, Morlaàs mint, struck by the hammer. Obverse: floriate cross; reverse: crowned arms of France and Navarre divides the value. Rare in this quality, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck at Morlaàs for Louis XIV 1643-52. Various arrangements of dots and stars exist on the reverse after the "B". It is priced over double the issues of the regular mints such as Toulouse or Bayonne.
