This specimen was lot 99023 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIII 1/4 Ecu 1643-Z AU53 NGC, Grenoble mint. 1/4 Ecu a la croix fleurdelisee. A choice example of the type typically encountered with more significant signs of handling, and despite slight striking weakness to the legends, remains in an admirable state of preservation." This quart d'écu au marteau was the largest silver coin regularly struck in France prior to the introduction of milled coinage in the 1640's. It was struck 1611-44 in countless variations of the obverse and reverse legends. This is the only time it was struck at Grenoble and is very rare. The denomination was introduced in 1577 at a face value of fifteen sols tournois, which had risen to 21 sols tournois by the time this coin was minted. The milled quart d'écu de Louis XIII was 15 sols.

Recorded mintage: 1,768[2].

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver.
