Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 699

This specimen was lot 699 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIII (1610-1643), Cu double tournois, 1643H, La Rochelle. A la vieille tête de Warin. D/ T. l. à g. R/ Trois lis dans le champ. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIII, 1610-43, copper double tournois of 1643, La Rochelle mint, with the old head by Warin. Obverse: laureate head to left; reverse: three lilies in the field. Very Fine.)"

This type is a double tournois of Louis XIII (r. 1610-43) struck at the La Rochelle mint in 1642-43. These coins were produced by private contractors in large quantities at a profusion of mints and in many varieties until the 1640's. The issues of Henry IV were reasonable compared to those of the regency of Louis XIII, when the queen-mother sold production contracts to many of her supporters. The face value was two deniers. This specimen was probably milled, not hammered.

Recorded mintage: 6,656,603, a common date.

Specification: copper, 3.13 g, 19-20 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 2,52 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 220, Dupl-1377; Gad-12, KM 127.6.
