Jean Elsen sale 153, lot 1377

This specimen was lot 1377 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €135 (about US$171 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BOUILLON ET SEDAN, Godefroid-Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne (1652-1721), Cu double de France, 1683, Bouillon. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Inscription en trois lignes. En dessous, une tour entre trois lis et la date. Très Beau. (county of Bouillon and Sedan, Godfrey de la Tour d'Auvergne, 1652-1721, copper double of France of 1683, Bouillon mint. Obverse: draped and armored bust right; reverse: three line inscription, tower between between three lilies and the date. Very Fine.)"

The SCWC lists this duchy under French states as the area was annexed by Louis XIV in 1678 and permanently added to France but we list this with the Bishopric of Liege which had suzerainty in the early 1600's. We believe this coin was struck in imitation of the French double tournois, struck in large numbers until the 1640's. It seems to be a one year type.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, 3.13 g, 19-20 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 3,04 g.

Catalog reference: P.A. 6372; De Mey R79.
