Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 73613
SB222-73613r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73613 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1647-T. Nantes Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU-50. Though hammered on an odd flan, this nice piece displays robust details and the deep colored surfaces obscure the rub that is present and provide a sublime appearance. Engrossing and charming in every way." The hammered quart d'écu au marteau was supposed to be superseded by the milled quart d'écu à la mèche longue but continued in production until 1649. It was demonetized in 1652, 1666 and finally 1679. Many survive. One-eighth écus also exist but are scarce. This is not a product of the Nantes mint but of the Morlaàs mint, as evidenced by the arms of France impaled with the arms of Béarn and Navarre. Various arrangements of dots and stars exist on the reverse after the "B". It is priced over double the issues of the regular mints such as Toulouse or Bayonne.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce[2].

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, designed by Richard Lamy.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 433, Dr/2 № 292, KM-49.2; Gad-138.
