This specimen was lot 22123 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $3,720. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1647-H VF Details (Removed From Jewelry, Repaired) NGC, La Rochelle mint. A rare and coveted type that presents well despite the damage." The double louis of the early part of the reign of Louis XIV are very rare. A few double louis d'or à la mèche courte are known for 1643-45 and 1648 and some double louis d'or à la mèche longue are recorded for 1646-53. No more were struck until 1690.

Recorded mintage: 1,520, a common date of a rare type.

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-30 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
