Colombia 1825-P FM 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 1562 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description[1] noted, "1825 FM 8 escudos. Popayán mint. MS-63 (NGC). Types as above. Rich yellow gold, highly lustrous. Scattered surface marks, mostly of little consequence. An especially nice specimen of the type. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal 16 pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets but nice specimens like the one shown here are, as always, seldom seen.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz; this specimen: 27.12 grams, 37.20 mm diameter.
