This specimen was lot 30457 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1824 Popayán-FM, XF45 NGC. Delicately toned with considerable mint luster and well-struck details. An unusually attractive example of this early date." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz.
Catalog reference: KM 82.2, Fr-68.
