from the Mountain Groan Collection

This specimen is one of a series struck at the Zacatecas mint 1874-93. It was one of a group of thirteen sold at the 1998 ANA sale. Another, probably from the same group, was lot 12392 in Heritage sale 296 (New York, July 2002), where it sold for $1,092.50. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,930.

Specification: 16.92 g, .875 fine gold, .476 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 413.8, Fr-138.
