Künker sale 352, lot 1642

This specimen was lot 1642 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,897 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Josef II. 1765-1790. 1/2 Souverain d'or 1787, F, Hall, für die Niederlande. GOLD. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, half souverain d'or of 1787, Hall mint, for the Netherlands. Scarce in this quality, choice, uncirculated.)"

This type is filed under the Austrian Netherlands, an area which is now Belgium and Luxembourg. Besides Hall, similar coins are known from Vienna and Brussels. The type was struck 1786-90 and previous souverains d'or date back to the reign of Maria Theresa.
