Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 22359
SB121-22359r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22359 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Isabel II. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield; Countermark: XF Details. Type VI Countermark, crowned Y.II. within circle applied to the obverse of an 1834-Pi JS Mexico Republic 8 Reales. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837, by decree of 1 February 1836. A rather sneaky host mint/date from the "Cap & Rays" series found with a Philippines countermark and should be considered SCARCE and desirable. The countermark is somewhat unevenly applied, but with good definition of the crowns features and full cipher with a die crack in the queen's cipher giving the appearance of an "H" offering an interesting diagnostic for this punch. A wholesome survivor with signs of handling consistent for the grade displaying lovely rich mottled parchment and gray patina adding to is pleasing appearance and overall eye appeal sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters." This type is known for 1834-37 and the SCWC lists this as one of the common undertypes. The authorities in Manila used this counterstamp (an abbreviation of "Isabel II") after the death of Ferdinand VII made the "F.7o" stamp obsolete. The SCWC[2] notes, "Countermarking of foreign coins was halted in Manila by the edict of March 31, 1837 after Spain had recognized the independence of Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile and other former colonies in Central and South America."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-A130; Basso-43; Gil Crown variety 5-4-3-III.
