Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1896
JE162-1896r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1896 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,158 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV louis d'or juvénile à la tête laurée, 1660 A, Paris. D/ T. laurée à d., à la longue chevelure couvrante. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Rare. Minuscules coups au droit. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the laureate juvenile bust of 1660, Paris mint. Obverse: laureate head right with long hair; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned L's, cantonned with four lilies. Rare, minor nicks on the obverse, Extremely Fine.)"

After some substantial mintages during the period 1646-53, the production of louis d'or dwindled until the great reminting of the 1690's. There are many fascinating types issued during the intervening period, all rare, including this one, the louis d'or juvénile, minted in France 1659-83. Droulers assigns three catalog numbers to this issue, based on differences in the king's hairstyles: Dr/4 № 348, 349 or 352. None are common but № 352 is the most available.

Recorded mintage: 61,827.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, designed by J. B Du Four, this specimen 6,74 g.

Catalog reference: KM 200.1, Dr/4 № 348, 349 or 352, Dr/2 № 233, Fr-421; Dupl. 1425; Gad-246.
