Ponterio sale 168, lot 50102

This specimen was lot 50102 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,351. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 40 Francs, AN 13 (1804-05)-A. NGC AU-58." Despite the modest mintage, this is one of the common forty francs of Napoleon. Only the 1811-A and 1812-A are cheaper.

Recorded mintage: 251,191.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
