Spain 1773-M PJ 8 escudos

Heritage sale 3021, lot 22729

This Spanish equivalent of the doubloon was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-84. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Spanish eight escudos are very rare. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729. This specimen was lot 22729 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1773-PJ Madrid, AU58 NGC, very nicely struck bust details, original toning with a hint purple, an attractive coin in all respects."
