Great Britain 1643 triple unite Fr-258
This specimen was lot 1129 in Sincona sale 79 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 260,000 CHF (about US$311,610 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Charles I. 1625-1649. Triple unite 1643, Oxford. Tall narrow bust without scarf and longer olive branch. Mintmark plume. Very rare. NGC MS63. Magnificent condition." The gold of the early part of Charles's reign comprised of angels (11 shillings), unites (20 shillings), double crowns (ten shillings) and crowns (five shillings). The triple unite was struck only by the royalists at Shrewsbury and Oxford after Charles's breach with Parliament. Survivors today are hotly pursued and bring enormous sums at auction. Many varieties exist.
