Italy 1863-M BN 50 centesimi
This dime-sized coin is a common date of a series struck 1863-7 during the régime of Victor Emanuel II, first king of the unified Italy. More were issued from Turin and Naples but this is the most common date. This denomination was not issued again until 1889, during the reign of Umberto I, suggesting a surplus in bank vaults. Italy managed to stay in the Latin Monetary Union until World War One bankrupted the treasury.
