Italy 1867-M BN 50 centesimi
This specimen was lot 568 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $157.30. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Regno d'Italia. Vittorio Emanuele II. 1861-1878. AR 50 Centesimi. Milano (Milan) mint. Dated 1867 M BN. Value on reverse. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Mottled toning over silvery surfaces. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, May 1978." This dime-sized coin is a common date of a series struck 1863-7 during the régime of Victor Emanuel II, first king of the unified Italy. More were issued from Turin and Naples but this is the most common mint. This denomination was not issued again until 1889, during the reign of Umberto I, suggesting a surplus in bank vaults. Italy managed to stay in the Latin Monetary Union until World War One bankrupted the treasury.
Recorded mintage: 10,984,000.
