This specimen was lot 3177 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $9,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "1790 FM 8 escudos. Mexico City mint. MS-61 (NGC). Head of Carlos IV to right, CAROL IIII in legends around, date below/arms, garter around, legends, assayer, and mintmark around. Bright and frosty with a high degree of lustre on rich yellow gold surfaces. An exceptional Mint State specimen that is far nicer than most other coins with the same numerical grade assignment. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
