Aureo sale 261, lot 494

This specimen was lot 494 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €777 (about US$1,247 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1787. Carlos III. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. JJ. 8 escudos. Golpecito en canto. MBC. (Charles III, 1759-88, eight escudos of 1787, Bogotá mint. Edge nick, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin.

In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to .875 fine.

Reported Mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
