Colombia 1748-SF S 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 44074 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 2 Escudos, 1748-SF S. Bogota Mint. Ferdinand VI. PCGS AU-55. Transposed Lions and Castles. This handsome example boasts a bold strike, though slightly doubled on the obverse somewhat muddling the design features, with a complete cross. Lightly handled and attractive, this charming cob otherwise offers rather clear detail throughout--most notably in the final digit of the date. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection. Ex: Sedwick 10 (10/2011) Lot # 84. Ex: Joseph R. Lasser Collection (Ponterio - 1/2005) Lot # 876." This type was issued from Bogotá 1747-56. Specimens with legible dates are worth double those without. All have assayer initial "S". Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.76 g.
