Colombia 1748-SF S 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 276 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 30,000 € (about US$39,189 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1748. Fernando VI. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. S. 8 escudos. Lions and castles. It was encapsulated by NGC as XF40 no. 1524425-015. It was called the “superior” according to Restrepo because it appeared on the cover of all the cobs' catalogs in Colombia. Extremely rare. MBC/MBC+ [choice very fine]. Ex ANA 08/22/1975, no. 2440. Ex Goldberg 09/24/2007, no. 716. Ex Oro Macuquino Collection 12/03/2013, no. 73. Ex Gaspar de Portolà Collection 01/25/2018, no. 79." This type was struck 1747-56 and all dates are rare, the Bogota mint not being equipped to strike large coins. Gold two escudos are much more common.
