This specimen was of lot 24403 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1748-MF, XF45 NGC, well-struck features with traces of luster in the legends. Scarce type and a decent example." All eight escudos of this king are rare and expensive. The reverse motto, "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR," is Latin for "I follow a great name [Philip V]." The prior year, 1747, featured the very rare "imaginary bust" of Ferdinand VI (see KM 149). All Mexican colonial gold coinage may be considered scarce.
