Heritage sale 61259, lot 99207
H61259-99207r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99207 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Elusive 1725-Dated Louis d'Or Mirliton from Nantes, Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1725-T AU58 NGC, Nantes mint. Large palms variety. A superbly fleeting selection, presently standing as the sole example certified by NGC, and the only we have ever encountered. Notably missing from Les monnaies des quatre Roi Louis though listed by Gadoury, we would note that the latter records a single sales record for this mint-date (St. James's Auction 21, April 2012, Lot 595). Strikingly lustrous throughout, cartwheel effects abound on this piece, with watery texture welling in the outer registers." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, grandes palmes, struck at the Nantes mint (mintmark "T") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723-25 only but from twenty-eight mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck 1723 only, and was superseded in turn by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 78,658.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
