Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51318

Colonial quarter reales of the "Lions and castles" type are known from the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán mints for 1796-1819 (KM 63 or KM 67). These undated specimens were struck before dates were applied. This specimen was lot 51318 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1789-95). Potosi Mint. Charles IV. NGC MS-65. Variety with lion's tail curled outward. An incredibly fresh Gem, this RARE anepigraphic issue from Potosi delivers full mint luster and exceptional frostiness. Aside from subtle swirls of amber, the coin remains entirely argent. Undoubtedly among the finest examples available. From the EMO Collection."
