Revision as of 08:35, 11 June 2025 by LatinKing2020 (talk | contribs) (Text replacement - "Zurich," to "Zürich,")
This specimen was lot 3246 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 2,800 (about US$3,689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1/2 Sword and Sceptre piece 1602. Sehr schön. (Scotland, half sword and sceptre piece of 1602, very fine.)"
The coinage of Scotland prior to unification with England is confusing. Bullion was scarce, so issues were small and sporadic. Pence and shillings were used but were not worth their English equivalents. This "half sword and sceptre" was worth three Scottish pounds or about ten English shillings.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.04 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 2.52 g.
