Alsace (1564-95) thaler Dav-8092
This specimen was lot 2728 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$594 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Erzherzog Ferdinand II. 1564-1595 Taler o. J. Ensisheim In den beiden D von FERDINANDVS die Initialen I-B des Haller Stempelschneiders Jakob Bertorf. Selten, Sehr schön. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand II, 1564-95, undated thaler, Ensisheim mint. Inside the "D" of "FERDINANDUS" is the initials "I-B" of the engraver Jakob Bertorf. Rare, Very fine.)"
Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. None are rare. The variety with the "I-B" in the "D" is Davenport 8092C.
