Sincona sale 18, lot 1947

This specimen was lot 1947 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 13,000 (about US$17,129 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"20 Mark 1905. München Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich-gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, twenty mark of 1905, Munich mint, very rare, choice extremely fine.)"

Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. The gold issues of this locale are scanty and rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 7.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW, this specimen 7.96 g.

Catalog reference: J. 279. KM 185. Fr-3857.
