This specimen was lot 32960 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "Wilhelm I Proof Pfennig 1875-C PR64 Brown PCGS, Berlin mint. A slightly glossy appearance to the details and this rare proof and a heavily-defined rim attest to the superior quality of the current offering--with only 5 pre-1886 proofs seen by either NGC or PCGS." This coin is a copper one pfennig from a type issued 1873-77, 1885-89 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C", shown here), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. The Frankfurt mint, which closed in 1879, struck this type 1874-76. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design.
Recorded mintage: 22,654,070, fairly common for an early date.
