This specimen was lot 10166 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €576 (about US$600). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Mark, 1628. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC VG-8. This extremely rare Mark 1628 were made from reengraved 1616 dies. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." Throughout the sixteenth century, one speciedaler was 96 skilling; at some point in the 1620's, it was raised to 144 skilling and then back to 96 skilling. When the dust had settled, the speciedaler, formerly four marks or 1⅓ krone, was now six marks or 1½ krone. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
