Mozambique in 1942, from Hammond's atlas

This issue, minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Mozambique, is the last silver five escudos for that colony. Previous issues were dated 1935, 1938 and 1949 and subsequent copper-nickel issues are dated 1971 and 1973. The coin is common. Soon after this coin was issued, nationalists in Mozambique began their agitation for independence, triggering a multifactional war that continued after the Portuguese withdrew in 1975.

Recorded mintage: 8,000,000.

Specification: 4 g, .650 silver, .083 troy oz ASW, 22 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 84, Gomes-23.01.
