This issue, minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Mozambique, is the last five escudos for that colony. Previous silver issues were dated 1935, 1938, 1949 and 1960 and a subsequent copper-nickel issues are dated 1971 and 1973. The coin is common. This coin was issued towards the end of the war for independence. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975, triggering a multifactional war that continued for decades.
