Mozambique 1974 10 escudos
Mozambique became a possession of the Portuguese after a series of agreements with local sultans along the southeast coast of Africa. The first trading post was established in 1505. It remained a Portuguese colony until 1975, when, after a protracted civil war, it was granted independence from Portugal. Coinage of colonial Mozambique was a mixture of countermarked foreign silver coins and regular coinage. This copper-nickel ten escudos was issued 1968-1974, right up to the time of independence. Wikipedia comments, "An estimated one million Mozambicans perished during the civil war, 1.7 million took refuge in neighbouring states, and several million more were internally displaced."
