This specimen was lot 51388 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1805-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC VF Details--Cleaned. Sharply detailed for this RARE date with light accentuating tone. From the EMO Collection." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.
Recorded mintage: 56,000.
Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.
